Why “Fibre Is the New Protein” Is an Unhelpful Message

A recent article on the BBC website suggested that fibre is “the new protein" a headline designed to grab attention, but I think it risks creating more confusion than clarity.
What makes this even more confusing is the constant stream of TikToks, reels and wellness soundbites telling us to prioritise one nutrient, cut another or chase the latest “must-have” food. When mainstream media then labels fibre as a trend or “the new protein,” it only adds to the noise.
Yes, we absolutely need more fibre. Most people fall short, and it plays a vital role in digestion, metabolic health and overall wellbeing.
But fibre is not “the new protein.” And framing it that way implies that protein is a trend we have or can move on from, rather than a nutrient that remains essential and something many still don't get enough of.
Protein supports muscle maintenance and gain, bone health, blood sugar balance, appetite regulation and energy. Yet many of the women I work with still struggle to eat enough of it day to day. Suggesting that protein is yesterday’s news only widens that gap.
Fibre matters. Protein matters. Healthy fats matters. We need each of them and we need to balance these, not one replacing the other.
